Vaccination Advice for International Travellers
If you’re preparing for international travel to countries where certain infectious diseases are more common, it’s essential to ensure you’re protected. At Layanson Pharmacy, our travel clinic offers expert advice and vaccinations to help you travel safely and confidently.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is typically spread through contaminated food or water, or through close personal contact with an infected individual. In rare cases, it can lead to liver failure.
If you’re travelling to areas where hepatitis A is common, such as parts of Africa, Asia, or South America, it’s important to get vaccinated before your trip. Ideally, the vaccine should be administered well in advance, as it is usually given in two or three doses. Even if your travel date is approaching, receiving at least the first dose can still offer some protection.
Visit our Layanson Pharmacy travel clinic to learn more about your options and get started with the hepatitis A vaccine.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a blood-borne virus that can also cause serious liver disease. It spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids—common risks include unsterile medical procedures, tattoos, or shared personal hygiene items.
Travelers to high-risk regions (Asia, Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe) are encouraged to receive the hepatitis B vaccine. It is typically administered in 2 or 3 doses. If time is limited, a combined Hepatitis A & B vaccine may be available as an accelerated option.
Our trained clinicians at Layanson Pharmacy can advise you on the most suitable vaccination schedule for your trip.
Typhoid
Typhoid fever is contracted through contaminated food and water, especially in countries with poor sanitation. It’s common in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America.
There are two primary types of typhoid vaccines:
Vi vaccine – a single injection
TY21a vaccine – oral capsules taken over several days
Regardless of vaccination, you should still take precautions such as:
Drinking only sealed bottled water
Avoiding ice, uncooked vegetables, and unpeeled fruit
For consultation and vaccinations, visit the Layanson Pharmacy travel clinic.
Diphtheria, Tetanus & Polio (DTP)
Many travellers receive a booster dose of the combined DTP vaccine before travelling to areas where these infections are still present. Diphtheria, while rare in the UK, is highly contagious and can be life-threatening.
Ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date by checking with our pharmacists at Layanson Pharmacy.
Meningitis ACWY (Required for Hajj & Umrah)
The MenACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal meningitis and is a mandatory requirement for anyone attending Hajj or Umrah in Saudi Arabia. It’s also recommended for those travelling to areas of Africa known as the “meningitis belt.”
We provide both the vaccine and the official certification required for travel. Book your consultation with our team at Layanson Pharmacy.
Anti-Malarial Tablets
Malaria remains a serious health risk in many parts of the world, including sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Asia, and South America. Antimalarial medication should be started at least 4 to 6 weeks before your departure.
Our pharmacy can provide tailored advice and prescriptions based on your travel destination and medical history. Visit Layanson Pharmacy to protect yourself against malaria.
Yellow Fever
For travellers heading to certain regions of Africa and South America, a Yellow Fever vaccination may be required. More information can be found on the NHS Yellow Fever page.
We also offer Yellow Fever vaccination certificates, which are often needed for border entry in some countries.
Additional Considerations
You may require special vaccinations or precautions depending on:
Your age and health condition
Your occupation, especially if you work in healthcare or aid relief
Exposure to animals, which may increase your risk of rabies
