Chickenpox Vaccination in Pontypool

Protect yourself and others with the chickenpox vaccine available at Layanson Pharmacy.
Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection that causes an itchy, blister-like rash. While it’s generally mild for most children, it can pose serious risks to certain individuals, such as:

  • Pregnant women

  • Babies

  • Teenagers

  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

If you or someone you care for falls into one of these categories, vaccination is strongly recommended as the most effective way to prevent the virus.

Who Should Get the Chickenpox Vaccine?

Vaccination is advised if you:

  • Are 9 months or older

  • Have never had chickenpox

  • Are in close contact with individuals at high risk (e.g. cancer patients or immunocompromised individuals)

  • Work in healthcare or environments with patient interaction

Eligible professionals include:

  • Doctors and nurses

  • Paramedics and ambulance crews

  • GP and hospital receptionists

  • Ward cleaning staff

  • Catering teams in hospitals

  • Lab personnel exposed to the virus

If you’re unsure whether you’ve had chickenpox, a blood test can confirm your immunity.

Who Should Not Receive the Vaccine?

Due to the live nature of the vaccine, it’s not suitable for:

  • Individuals undergoing chemotherapy or with compromised immune systems (e.g, HIV)

  • Pregnant women

  • Babies under 9 months

  • Anyone who had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or ingredients like gelatin or neomycin

  • Individuals who received the MMR vaccine within the last four weeks

If you’re planning a pregnancy, it’s advised to wait at least one month after your final chickenpox dose before trying to conceive.

Feeling Unwell?

If you’re currently experiencing a fever or illness, wait until you’ve recovered before getting vaccinated.

How Is the Vaccine Given?

The chickenpox vaccine is administered as two injections, usually in the upper arm, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.

Possible Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary. These may include:

  • Redness, soreness, or swelling at the injection site

  • A mild fever

  • A light rash near the injection site or on the body, usually about a month after vaccination

In very rare cases, severe allergic reactions can occur. Our trained professionals at Layanson Pharmacy are fully prepared to manage and treat such reactions promptly.
