Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs)

Understanding Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Advice and Treatment Available at Layanson Pharmacy

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common and can affect different parts of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, and even the kidneys. While anyone can get a UTI, they tend to occur more frequently in women, and for some, they become a recurring issue.

At Layanson Pharmacy, our experienced team is here to offer guidance and treatment options for uncomplicated UTIs, helping you manage symptoms and recover quickly.

What Is a UTI?

A UTI is an infection caused by bacteria entering the urinary system. In most cases, the infection begins in the lower urinary tract (bladder and urethra), but it can also spread upwards to affect the kidneys and ureters.

Common symptoms of a lower UTI include:

  • A burning sensation or pain when urinating

  • Frequent need to urinate, even when the bladder is empty

  • Feeling an urgent need to pass urine

  • Cloudy, strong-smelling urine

  • Lower abdominal discomfort

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice.

When Is It More Serious?

Infections that reach the upper urinary tract, such as the kidneys or ureters, can be more serious. Signs of an upper UTI may include:

  • High fever or chills

  • Pain in the sides or lower back

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Feeling confused or agitated (particularly in older adults)

In these cases, you should consult a GP or visit a healthcare provider immediately.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If a UTI is suspected, your GP may request a urine sample to confirm the diagnosis. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat the infection, and it’s vital to complete the entire course, even if symptoms improve before the medicine is finished.

  • Women typically receive a 3-day course of antibiotics

  • Men, pregnant women, or those with more severe infections may require a longer course

  • Pain relief, like paracetamol can help ease discomfort

  • Staying well hydrated can help flush bacteria from the system
