Throat Infection

Throat Infection: What You Should Know
Throat infections are common and, in most cases, nothing to worry about. They often clear up on their own within a week. Still, they’re uncomfortable, and one of the top reasons people visit the doctor or take time off work.
A throat infection usually means your throat feels sore, irritated, or scratchy, especially when swallowing. It can range from mild discomfort to a more intense burning sensation. While most throat infections are viral (like those caused by the common cold), other causes include bacteria (like strep throat or tonsillitis), smoking, pollution, or allergies.
At Layanson Pharmacy, we offer medication and guidance to help relieve your symptoms quickly and safely.
Symptoms of a Throat Infection
Throat infections can vary, but some common symptoms include:
Sore throat and painful swallowing
Fever
Headache
Swollen glands in the neck
White patches on the throat or tonsils
In some cases, especially in children, throat infections can also cause abdominal pain, vomiting, or joint discomfort. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, our team at Layanson Pharmacy can help you get the appropriate treatment.
What Causes It?
Most throat infections are caused by viruses, especially those linked to colds or the flu. In more serious cases, bacterial infections like strep throat or mononucleosis (mono) may be the culprit. Lifestyle or environmental triggers—such as smoking, pet dander, or pollution—can also contribute.
Diagnosis & Treatment Options
To diagnose a throat infection, your GP may perform a physical exam and possibly a throat swab (throat culture) to check for bacteria like strep. In cases where mono is suspected, a blood test may be done.
If the infection is viral, antiviral medication may be prescribed (especially for flu-related infections), and these can be obtained from Layanson Pharmacy. However, antibiotics won’t work for viruses—only for bacterial infections. If your infection is bacterial, a course of antibiotics can help you feel better within a few days.
